What is an MSI Plessey barcode?

MSI Plessey (also called Modified Plessey or MSI) is a numeric-only linear barcode symbology developed by MSI Data Corporation in the 1970s, derived from the original Plessey code. MSI Plessey encodes digits 0–9 using a 4-bar, 4-space pattern where bars represent bits (narrow=0, wide=1). It is primarily used in retail shelf labelling and warehouse bin location labelling — particularly in grocery and pharmaceutical retail environments where shelf management systems assign numeric location codes.

Symbol structure explained

Each MSI Plessey digit is encoded as a group of 4 bar-space pairs representing the 4-bit binary equivalent of the digit (0=narrow, 1=wide). A narrow bar start pattern and a distinctive stop pattern (wide bar, narrow bar, wide bar) flank the data. There are no inter-character gaps — characters are abutted directly. The symbology always reads left to right.

Check digit options

MSI Plessey supports four check digit variants:

  1. Modulo 10 (most common): Single check digit using the Luhn algorithm.
  2. Modulo 10 × 2: Double Modulo 10 for higher reliability.
  3. Modulo 11: Using IBM's variant (weights 2–7 cycling right to left).
  4. Modulo 11 + Modulo 10: Double check — highest reliability.

Modulo 10 (single) is the most widely implemented. Always confirm which variant is required by the receiving system.

MSI Plessey vs. Interleaved 2 of 5 vs. Code 128

MSI Plessey is less dense than Interleaved 2 of 5 for purely numeric data and far less versatile than Code 128. It survives in retail shelf labelling because legacy shelf management systems from the 1980s–1990s were built around it and remain in use. For new system designs, Code 128 or ITF is preferred.

When to use MSI Plessey

Use MSI Plessey only when:

  • An existing retail shelf management or warehouse bin system requires it.
  • Legacy handheld terminals or fixed scanners are configured exclusively for MSI Plessey.

Do not adopt MSI Plessey for new systems. Use Code 128 or ITF for new numeric-label applications.

Printing requirements

Minimum X-dimension: 0.191 mm. Wide-to-narrow ratio: 2:1. Quiet zones: 10× X-dimension each side. Bar height: no ISO minimum, but 6.35 mm conventional minimum. Human-readable digits should be printed below. Always include the check digit(s) in the human-readable text.

Common scanning failures

MSI Plessey's wide-to-narrow ratio discrimination is its main vulnerability — printers with low resolution or ink bleed can cause narrow elements to appear wide. The stop pattern (3 elements: wide, narrow, wide) is unique and must be printed precisely. Scanners must be explicitly configured to decode MSI Plessey, as it is disabled by default on most modern scanners.
