What is a Pharmacode barcode?
Pharmacode (also called Pharmaceutical Binary Code) is a linear barcode symbology developed by Laetus GmbH specifically for the pharmaceutical packaging industry. Unlike most barcodes, Pharmacode encodes a single integer (from 3 to 131,070) in a binary scheme — narrow bars represent '1' and wide bars represent '2', with alternating bar-space groups read right to left. Pharmacode is used primarily by pharmaceutical packaging machinery (blister packers, cartoners, labellers) as a machine-readable pack check to prevent wrong-product packaging errors on high-speed production lines.
Binary encoding structure
Pharmacode encodes a single numeric value using a binary-weighted bar system:
- Narrow bar (1 module): Represents binary value based on position.
- Wide bar (2 modules): Represents binary value × 2.
- Bars and spaces alternate; the code is read right to left.
- Minimum 1 bar, maximum 16 bars.
- The numeric value range is 3–131,070.
Because Pharmacode encodes only one integer, there is no character set — the encoded number is a machine-internal pack code assigned by the pharmaceutical manufacturer for a specific product/line/version.

Pharmacode has no built-in check digit or error correction. Data integrity is ensured instead by the production line system: the packaging machine compares the scanned Pharmacode value to the expected value programmed for the current batch, and ejects or halts if they do not match. Pharmacode vs. Code 39 vs. GS1 DataMatrix
Pharmacode is not a general-purpose barcode — it encodes only a single integer and has no human-readable equivalent in the traditional sense. Code 39 and GS1 DataMatrix encode structured alphanumeric data readable by standard scanners. Pharmacode is read only by packaging line vision systems and dedicated Pharmacode readers. It is not printed for consumer or retail scanning — it is an internal production quality control code.
When to use Pharmacode
Pharmacode is used exclusively in pharmaceutical manufacturing for:

Pharmacists, patients, and retail systems never scan Pharmacode. It is a production-internal code only. For retail and supply chain identification, use EAN-13, GS1 DataMatrix, or PZN.
Printing requirements
Pharmacode is typically printed by pre-printing on folding carton artwork. Bar specifications: narrow bar width 0.375 mm–1.0 mm; wide bar width = 2× narrow; narrow space width = narrow bar width; wide space = not used. Height typically 10 mm minimum. Pharmacode readers (vision systems) are calibrated per production line — always confirm bar specifications with the packaging machinery vendor.
Common scanning failures
Pharmacode's biggest risk is the production machine reading the correct barcode from the wrong pack (orientation flip). Because Pharmacode reads right-to-left, a reversed symbol gives a completely different numeric value — proper registration marks or orientation-confirming readers are essential. Print defects that alter bar width ratios can also cause the machine to read an incorrect numeric value and trigger a false rejection.
