What is a Data Matrix barcode?
Data Matrix is a two-dimensional matrix barcode standardised in ISO/IEC 16022. It consists of black and white modules arranged in a square or rectangular grid, with a solid L-shaped border ('finder pattern') on two sides and an alternating clock track on the other two. Data Matrix excels at encoding large amounts of data in very small physical spaces, making it the preferred choice in electronics manufacturing, pharmaceutical labelling (GS1 DataMatrix), and aerospace parts marking.
Symbol structure explained
Every Data Matrix symbol has:
- L-finder: A solid border on the left and bottom edges used for orientation.
- Clock track: An alternating black/white border on the top and right edges defining module positions.
- Data region: Modules encoding the payload and Reed-Solomon error correction codewords.
Symbols range from 10×10 to 144×144 modules. Rectangular variants (DMRE) extend the format for narrow label applications.
Capacity and versions
The smallest symbol (10×10) encodes up to 6 alphanumeric characters. The largest (144×144) encodes up to 3,116 bytes / 2,335 alphanumeric / 7,089 numeric characters. Reed-Solomon error correction recovers up to 30% of damaged data in ECC 200 (the current standard). Older ECC 000–140 formats are obsolete; only ECC 200 should be used in new implementations.
Data Matrix vs. QR Code vs. PDF417
Data Matrix achieves higher data density than QR Code at very small sizes (< 5 mm²), making it ideal for Direct Part Marking (DPM) by laser or chemical etching on PCBs and surgical instruments. QR Code is larger but universally scannable by consumer smartphones. PDF417 is a stacked linear code used for ID documents and boarding passes where 2D matrix codes are not required.

When to use Data Matrix
Data Matrix is the right choice for:
- Pharmaceutical unit-dose labelling (GS1 DataMatrix with Application Identifiers).
- Electronics PCB component traceability.
- Aerospace and defence part marking (MIL-STD-130).
- Medical device UDI (Unique Device Identification) per FDA and EU MDR.
- Any application requiring very small symbol footprint with high data density.
Printing and marking requirements
Quiet zone: 1 module width on all sides (minimum). For DPM applications, follow ISO/IEC TR 29158 verification grades. Minimum X-dimension: 0.254 mm for inkjet/thermal; 0.1 mm for laser DPM. Always verify with an ISO-compliant verifier — a visually clean symbol can still fail scan grade if module placement deviates beyond tolerance.
Common scanning failures
Insufficient contrast between modules and substrate is the leading DPM failure cause — especially on metallic or anodised surfaces. For these substrates, use polarised lighting in the scanner to reduce specular reflection. Incorrect quiet zone and damaged L-finder edges also cause orientation failures.

Can consumer smartphones scan Data Matrix codes?
Yes, but not as reliably as QR codes. iOS 15.4+ and most Android camera apps can scan Data Matrix, but a dedicated barcode scanner app may be needed for older devices or poor lighting conditions.
What is GS1 DataMatrix?
GS1 DataMatrix is Data Matrix (ECC 200) used with GS1 Application Identifiers — structured data elements like GTIN (01), batch (10), and expiry (17). It is mandatory for pharmaceutical unit-dose labelling in many markets.
