What is a PDF417 barcode?
PDF417 (Portable Data File 417) is a stacked linear barcode symbology invented by Symbol Technologies in 1991. 'PDF' refers to Portable Data File, and '417' reflects that each codeword consists of 4 bars and spaces totalling 17 modules. PDF417 can encode thousands of characters of text, binary data, or structured data — making it the standard for government ID documents (US driver's licences, AAMVA standard), airline boarding passes (BCBP), and shipping labels.
Symbol structure explained
PDF417 stacks multiple linear rows (minimum 3, maximum 90) of codewords side by side. Each row contains:
- Left row indicator codeword (row number, total rows, error level).
- 1–30 data codewords.
- Right row indicator codeword.
- Start and stop patterns flanking the row.
The symbol is always surrounded by a quiet zone of 2× X-dimension on each side and 2 rows top and bottom.
Capacity and error correction
PDF417 supports up to 1,850 alphanumeric characters, 2,710 numeric digits, or 1,108 bytes per symbol. Error correction levels range from 0 (2 codewords) to 8 (512 codewords), with Level 2 recommended as minimum and Level 5 recommended for harsh environments. At Level 8, up to 510 damaged codewords can be recovered — roughly 65% of a maximum-capacity symbol.
PDF417 vs. QR Code vs. Data Matrix
PDF417 is physically larger than QR or Data Matrix for the same payload, but it is preferred in government and transport applications where existing infrastructure (laser scanners, not cameras) and regulatory mandates dictate its use. QR Code is more compact and camera-scannable; Data Matrix excels at very small sizes for DPM.

Common scanning failures
Distorted aspect ratio (too tall or too wide relative to data) and insufficient quiet zones are the primary PDF417 failure modes. Damaged row indicator codewords prevent correct row sequencing — use Error Correction Level ≥ 2 to mitigate this. Laser scanners that sweep a single line may miss rows if the symbol is angled more than 10° from horizontal.
