What is an EAN-13 barcode?

The European Article Number (now technically called the International Article Number, though EAN remains the standard abbreviation) is the globally recognized 13-digit barcode standard used to identify retail products at the point of sale. Encoded as a GTIN-13 (Global Trade Item Number), this continuous, fixed-length, one-dimensional symbology is found on almost every consumer product sold outside of North America. It allows point-of-sale systems, inventory databases, and supply chain management software to instantly query product details, pricing, and stock levels.

The 13 digits explained

An EAN-13 barcode strictly encodes 13 numeric digits, which are structurally divided into four distinct components to ensure global uniqueness and data integrity.

1. GS1 Prefix (2-3 digits): The first digits identify the national GS1 member organization to which the manufacturer is registered (e.g., 50 for the UK, 400-440 for Germany, 300-379 for France). Note that this indicates the country of registration, not necessarily the country of origin or manufacture.

2. Company Prefix (varies, 4-7 digits): Following the GS1 prefix is the unique manufacturer code assigned by the regional GS1 authority. The combined GS1 Prefix and Company Prefix uniquely identify the brand owner.

3. Item Reference (varies, 2-6 digits): This segment is assigned by the manufacturer to uniquely identify the specific product, including its exact size, flavor, color, and packaging configuration.

4. Check Digit (1 digit): The final digit acts as a mathematical checksum to validate that the preceding 12 digits have been scanned (or manually entered) correctly, using a Modulo 10 calculation.

Check digit algorithm (Modulo 10)

The 13th digit of an EAN-13 barcode is always a calculated check digit. Scanners independently calculate this digit upon reading the first 12 numbers and compare it against the printed 13th digit to prevent data corruption. The calculation uses a Modulo 10 algorithm with alternating weights of 1 and 3.

Step-by-step example for the number 590123412345:

  1. Number the positions 1 to 12, starting from the left.
  2. Add the digits in the EVEN positions: 9 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 3 + 5 = 22
  3. Multiply that sum by 3: 22 × 3 = 66
  4. Add the digits in the ODD positions: 5 + 0 + 2 + 4 + 2 + 4 = 17
  5. Add the results from steps 3 and 4 together: 66 + 17 = 83
  6. Subtract the sum from the nearest equal or higher multiple of 10. The nearest multiple of 10 higher than 83 is 90. 90 - 83 = 7.

The check digit is 7, making the full EAN-13 number 5901234123457.

When to use EAN-13

EAN-13 is mandatory for any product intended for general retail checkout systems outside the United States and Canada (where UPC-A is traditionally preferred, though EAN-13 is now widely accepted). You should use EAN-13 if you are packaging consumer goods, books (where it encodes an ISBN), or periodicals (where it encodes an ISSN) destined for supermarkets, hardware stores, pharmacies, or major e-commerce fulfillment centers.

Printing requirements

To ensure a 100% first-pass read rate by laser scanners and imaging cameras, EAN-13 barcodes must adhere to strict spatial and optical tolerances.

1. Quiet Zones: A mandatory blank space (the quiet zone) must exist on the left and right sides of the barcode. For EAN-13, the left quiet zone must be at least 11 times the width of the narrowest bar (the X-dimension), and the right quiet zone must be at least 7 times the X-dimension.

2. Sizing and Magnification: The nominal (100% magnification) size of an EAN-13 symbol is 37.29mm wide by 25.93mm high. Standards permit scaling between 80% and 200%. Shrinking below 80% severely impacts the ability of standard retail scanners to resolve the bars.

3. Color Contrast: Scanners read the contrast between the dark bars and light spaces. Bars should be printed in black, dark blue, or dark brown. Spaces (and the quiet zones) should be white, yellow, or light orange. Never print red bars, as retail laser scanners use red light and will see the barcode as a blank space.

Common scanning failures

The most frequent cause of an EAN-13 barcode failing to scan is a violation of the quiet zones, often caused by placing text, graphics, or the edge of the package too close to the symbol. Other common failures include printing on highly reflective metallic surfaces without a solid white background, scaling the barcode down below the 80% threshold, or using color combinations lacking sufficient optical contrast under infrared or red-light scanners.

Does EAN-13 work in the USA and Canada?

Yes. Since 2005, the Sunrise 2005 initiative mandated that all North American retail point-of-sale systems must be capable of reading and processing 13-digit EAN-13 symbols alongside 12-digit UPC-A symbols.

What is the difference between EAN-13 and GTIN-13?

They refer to the exact same thing in modern supply chain terminology. EAN-13 is the name of the barcode symbol (the visual lines and spaces), while GTIN-13 (Global Trade Item Number) is the name of the 13-digit data structure encoded within it.

Can I make up my own 13-digit number for my products?

If you are only selling products internally within your own closed store or private inventory system, yes. Why does an ISBN book barcode look like an EAN-13?

Can EAN-13 encode letters or alphabet characters?

No. EAN-13 is a strictly numeric symbology. It can only encode the digits 0 through 9. If you need to encode alphanumeric data, you must use a different format such as Code 128 or a 2D barcode like a QR code.

What should I do if my package is too small for an EAN-13?
