What is a UPC-A barcode?

UPC-A (Universal Product Code version A) is the 12-digit barcode printed on virtually every retail product sold in North America. Developed by GS1 US in 1973, it was the first standardized barcode adopted at US grocery checkouts. Each UPC-A encodes a 12-digit GTIN-12: a 6-digit GS1 Company Prefix, a 5-digit item reference, and a 1-digit check digit. Scanners read the bars and spaces optically, returning the number to the point-of-sale system in milliseconds.

The 12 digits explained

Digit positions 1–6 form the GS1 Company Prefix assigned by GS1 US. Positions 7–11 are the Item Reference chosen by the brand owner. Position 12 is the Modulo 10 check digit. The first digit is sometimes called the Number System Character (NSC): 0 = standard retail, 2 = variable-weight items, 3 = drug/health, 4 = in-store use, 5 = coupons.

Check digit algorithm (Modulo 10)

  1. Write the 11 known digits.
  2. Sum digits at odd positions (1,3,5,7,9,11) × 3.
  3. Sum digits at even positions (2,4,6,8,10) × 1.
  4. Add both totals.
  5. Check digit = (10 − (total mod 10)) mod 10.

Step-by-step example for 03600029145_: Odd positions (0,6,0,2,1,5) × 3 = 42. Even positions (3,0,0,9,4) × 1 = 16. Total = 58. Check = (10 − 8) = 2 → full code: 036000291452.

UPC-A vs. EAN-13 vs. UPC-E

UPC-A is a subset of EAN-13: prepending a leading zero to a 12-digit UPC-A gives the equivalent EAN-13. Modern scanners accept both interchangeably. UPC-E is a compressed 6-digit version used on small packages; it can be decoded back to its UPC-A equivalent by the scanner.

When to use UPC-A

Use UPC-A when selling physical retail products in the United States or Canada. Most US retailers (Walmart, Target, Amazon FBA) require a valid GS1-issued UPC-A on product packaging. Do not invent your own company prefix — purchase one from GS1 US to ensure global uniqueness.

Printing requirements

Nominal size: 1.469 in × 1.02 in (37.29 mm × 25.91 mm). Magnification range: 80%–200%. Minimum bar height: 69% of symbol width at 100%. Quiet zone: 9× module width left and right. Preferred colors: black bars on white background; avoid red ink on bars.

Common scanning failures

Truncated height (bars too short), ink spread causing bar merging, quiet zone violations, and printing on glossy curved surfaces are the leading causes of UPC-A scan failures. Always validate with a GS1-compliant verifier before production runs.

Can I use a UPC-A barcode on products sold in Europe?

Yes. Prepend a zero to convert UPC-A to EAN-13 (e.g., 036000291452 → 0036000291452). All modern European scanners read both.
