What is a UPC-E barcode?
UPC-E is a compressed version of UPC-A designed for small retail packaging where a full 12-digit UPC-A barcode would not physically fit. By suppressing trailing zeros in the manufacturer code or product code, UPC-E encodes a 12-digit GTIN-12 in only 6 visible digits, producing a barcode roughly half the width of UPC-A. UPC-E is supported at all US and Canadian retail point-of-sale systems — scanners automatically expand the 6-digit code back to its 12-digit UPC-A equivalent before processing.
The 6 digits and zero suppression
UPC-E appears as 6 digits plus a number system character (0 or 1, printed as a prefix) and a check digit (printed as a suffix) — 8 characters visible in human-readable text, but only 6 data modules in the barcode itself. Zero suppression rules determine how a UPC-A is compressed: the parity pattern of the 6 bars encodes both the suppressed zeros and the check digit, so no explicit check digit bar appears in the symbol. Not every UPC-A can be compressed to UPC-E — only those with sufficient trailing zeros in the appropriate positions.
UPC-E to UPC-A expansion rules
Scanners expand UPC-E to UPC-A based on the last digit of the 6-digit code:
- Last digit 0,1,2: Manufacturer code = first 2 digits + last digit + 00000; item = digits 3–5.
- Last digit 3: Manufacturer = first 3 digits + 00000; item = digits 4–5.
- Last digit 4: Manufacturer = first 4 digits + 00000; item = digit 5.
- Last digit 5–9: Manufacturer = first 5 digits; item = 0000 + last digit.
These rules are applied automatically by every GS1-compliant scanner.
UPC-E vs. UPC-A vs. EAN-8
UPC-E is exclusive to North America (Number System 0 or 1 only). EAN-8 serves the same small-item purpose globally but uses a different encoding scheme and is allocated centrally by GS1. UPC-A is the full-size North American retail barcode. All three decode to a GTIN at the point of sale and are treated equivalently by POS systems.
When to use UPC-E
Use UPC-E only when:
- The product label is genuinely too small to accommodate a UPC-A (minimum UPC-A width: 37.29 mm at 100%).
- The product is sold exclusively in North America.
- The UPC-A can be validly compressed to UPC-E (not all UPC-A numbers are compressible).
Always verify compressibility with a GS1 tool before printing.
Printing requirements
Nominal size: 26.69 mm × 21.31 mm (including number system and check digit in human-readable). Magnification range: 80%–200%. Quiet zones: 9× module width left, 7× module width right. Always include the number system digit (left) and check digit (right) in human-readable text for manual entry.
Common scanning failures
Because UPC-E is narrower than UPC-A, bar width errors have proportionally more impact. Printing below 80% magnification significantly increases misread rates. Inverted quiet zones (printing too close to neighbouring graphics) are the most common cause of UPC-E rejections in retail compliance scanning.
