What is an EAN-2 add-on barcode?
EAN-2 (also called EAN-2 Supplemental or 2-digit add-on) is a supplementary barcode symbol printed to the right of a main EAN-13 or UPC-A barcode. It encodes exactly 2 digits — most commonly the issue number of a magazine, weekly newspaper, or other serial publication. Like EAN-5, EAN-2 cannot be scanned alone; it supplements the main ISSN/EAN-13 symbol. Standardised in ISO/IEC 15420, it allows newsstand and subscription systems to distinguish individual issues of the same title.
The 2 digits and their meaning
EAN-2 encodes 2 digits (00–99) using the same odd/even parity module structure as EAN-13 left-side characters. A single delineator separates the two character codewords. The 2 digits represent:
- Weekly publications: Issue week number (01–52).
- Monthly publications: Month number (01–12).
- Bimonthly/quarterly: Issue sequence number.

EAN-2 vs. EAN-5 vs. issue tracking without add-on

Large retailers and subscription systems sometimes track issues using only the main ISSN barcode plus their own internal lookup table — without relying on the add-on at all.

Printing requirements
The EAN-2 add-on is printed to the right of the main EAN-13/ISSN barcode with 5× X-dimension separation. It is shorter than an EAN-5 add-on (fewer characters) but uses the same bar height as the main symbol. Combined symbol width at 100% is approximately 10–12 mm wider than the main EAN-13 alone. Quiet zones must extend beyond the add-on on the right side.
Common scanning failures
The same failure modes as EAN-5 apply: insufficient separation from the main barcode, misaligned baseline, and quiet zone violations. Because EAN-2 has only 2 characters, it is physically narrower than EAN-5 — quiet zone violations on the right side are a proportionally larger risk if cover artwork extends too close to the barcode area.
